The Modern Woodmen Magazine
For use in case of an emergency, Modern Woodmen offers free McGruff® Safe Kids ID Kits to member families. Endorsed by the National Crime Prevention Council, these kid-friendly kits help parents educate their children on safety issues and give the parents peace of mind knowing they'll have their children's information on hand in case of emergency.
McGruff Safe Kids ID Kit
Stores a child’s personal information

Parents can review the kit with their children in the privacy of their home. The kit stores a child's fingerprints, personal information, special marks, and a photograph, so a child's information is at hand in case of an emergency. It also helps educate your children so they will know how to get help if needed.

 As a parent, you should:

  1. Approach the subject of safety in a
      nonthreatening way.

  2. Encourage your child to trust his or her
      intuitions.

  3. Make sure your child feels able to talk to you when something is
      bothering him or her.

  4. Let your child know that no one has the right to touch him or her
inappropriately or make him or her feel uncomfortable.

  5. Tell your child to scream "NO!" or "THIS IS NOT MY PARENT" if a stranger
asks him or her to help or threatens them.

  6. Share an easily remembered code word, so your child knows if he or she
should go home with a family friend.

  7. Never label clothing or a backpack with a child's name - an abductor
could use this to gain trust.

  8. Give your child instructions on what to do if he or she gets separated in a
      store or public place.

  9. Make sure your child knows his or her full name, address, phone number
and the place where you can be contacted as well as how to call 911,
make collect calls and dial the operator on a pay phone.

 10. Know where your children are at all times, and keep a list of their
      friends' addresses and phone numbers.

 11. Update your child's records every 12 months because of his or her
       growth.
