In the event of a death in the family or in preparation for your own, it is a good idea to have the following names and phone numbers on hand:



Contact Purpose of Call Name(s) Phone Number(s)
Clergy
  • Call a member of the clergy to officate at services, if desired
                                                                 
Funeral Director
  • Begin arrangements, including time and place of service
Relatives, Friends, Employer, Organizations
  • Notify of death and funeral arrangements
Attorney
  • Review will
  • Determine if estate taxes are an issue
  • Begin estate administration
Insurance Representatives
  • Find out which claims are available to you
  • Initiate the claims process as soon as possible, so you have enough money when bills start arriving
  • Ask which payout method will best suit your needs
                                    
Personal Representative of the Will
  • Settles and closes the estate as quickly as possible. If you are not the personal representative, you may want to contact him/her to ask questions and offer your assistance
Accountant
  • Your accountant can help you prepare final tax items such as estimated payments and final returns
Investment Advisers, Stock Broker, Banks, Credit Unions, Savings and Loans
  • Notify of death
Trust Officer(s)
  • Notify of death
Memorial Society
  • Notify of death
Organ or Tissue Donor Organization
  • Notify of death
Employer of the Deceased
  • Stop income for the deceased as soon as possible or you will have to return his/her checks
  • Make sure your family is still covered with health insurance, and find out how long that coverage will last
  • Find out if the deceased had any employer-sponsored life insurance plans or ongoing pension payments that you are eligible to receive
Social Security Administration
  • Notify of death
Pension Administration
  • Notify of death
Post Office
  • Notify of death and forward mail, if necessary
