Radon is an odorless, tasteless gas produced by the natural breakdown of uranium soil, rock and water throughout the United States. It is estimated that radon causes many thousands of deaths each year because breathing air that contains radon can cause lung cancer.
The surgeon general has warned that radon is the second-leading cause of lung cancer in this country. Only smoking causes more lung cancer deaths. If you smoke and your home has high radon levels, your risk of contracting lung cancer is especially high.
A short-term radon test kit is easy to use and the quickest way to test for radon in your home. The kit includes a packet that holds granual, activated charcoal. The charcoal absorbs any radon gas entering the packet from the surrounding air. At the end of the test period, you simply seal the prepaid mailer packet and send it to the laboratory for analysis. Complete testing instructions are provided, and after the analysis you'll receive a full test report by fax, mail or email.
