School Speech Contest
Modern Woodmen of America launched the Creative Writing Essay Contest in 1986. Today the contest is an important event in many schools across the nation, providing students with a valuable personal and academic experience. Since Modern Woodmen provides all materials at no charge, the program is easy to implement.

Develops lifelong skills

Students write a 500-word essay about a different topic each school year. They benefit from this opportunity to:
  • Be creative
  • Demonstrate their English skills
  • Use problem-solving skills
  • Gain self-esteem
  • Have fun!

Every child’s a winner
All participants receive ribbons in recognition of their hard work. The top three winners and the school receive trophies too.

Who can use this program?
Modern Woodmen members and nonmembers can use the Creative Writing Essay Contest for free! Designed for children between fifth and eighth grades, this program is used by public, parochial, private and home-schools.

1. Read to them.
When you read to children, you introduce them to imaginary worlds, teach them how to think in abstract ways and more.

2.  Let them see you write.
Even the simple acts of writing notes or holiday cards can introduce your child to the writing process.

3. Make writing supplies available.
Keep paper, pencils, crayons, blackboard and chalk handy.

4. Offer fun writing ideas.
Urge your children to write a story using each word only once, suggest that they write a mystery story or provide a fun topic for them to write about such as "what is the best part about being a kid?"
